INDIA COIN - ONE NAYE PAISA



The Indian One Naya paisa was a unit of currency equalling 1⁄100 (one-hundredth) of the Indian rupee. The symbol for paisa is ‘p’. In 1955, India adopted metric system for coinage and amended the "Indian Coinage Act". Subsequently, one paisa coins were introduced on 1 April 1957. 

From 1957 to 1964, one paisa coin was called "Naya Paisa" and on 1 June 1964, the term "Naya" was dropped and the denomination were simply called "One paisa". Naya paisa coin has been demonetized and is no longer a Legal tender.

SPECIAL COVER - SIKKIMPEX 82



A very little is known or read about the first Philatelic Competition that was held for three days at Gangtok during November 2-4, 1982. A handful of these covers is available with Mr. Ganesh Pradhan, Rhenock who gave a first hand information that he had witnessed the competition. Interestingly, i am happy to write that I had come across a certificate of Late Ganga Kaptan, Sikkim's first Nepali Novelist who had taken part at that competition.

I here want to share an anecdote that happened during the second Philatelic Exhibition that was held at Gangtok in 2002, exactly after twenty years. I was one of the 40 participants who took part in the exhibition and my first foray into the world of philately.

In a welcome speech, one of the officials of the Postal Department of Sikkim told that the exhibition was the first philatelic exhibition to be held at the Himalayan state of Sikkim but they had to accept their mistake when they were told that the first exhibition in Sikkim was held in 1982 and Mr. Ganesh Pradhan had exhibited the three special covers that was released then

Two covers was released - Heritage Post Office of Berhampore and Murshidabad Silk.

Autograph - Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Cricket)



Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh is an Indian international cricketer who plays all formats of the game. He plays for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
Kumar forayed onto the international scene in 2012 by making his T20I debut against Pakistan. The match took place in Bengaluru and Kumar took 3 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs in the match and had an economy rate of 2.25.
He made his ODI debut against Pakistan as well. On his very first ball, he dismissed Mohammad Hafeez. He made his test debut in 2013 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. He holds the record of being the highest Indian test scorer at number 10 (38 runs).
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a part of the 2013 Champions Trophy winning team. He was also adjudged the Man of the Tournament in 2013 during the Tri-Nation tournament.

Ranju Lamichane (Sikkim) is a film actress, known for her nepali film Basain (2005), Nepal's official entry for the Best Foreign-Language Film category of the 2006 Academy Awards. Some of her films are Mukti, Ko Hola Mero Mayalu, Barsha Aakash Ganga, Aandhi Toofan, Aawaj & other.

Autograph - Ramesh Krishnan (Tennis)



Ramesh Krishnan was born into this illustrious tennis playing family. Coached first by his grandfather, and later by his father, he also won the National title at the age of 16 in 1977. Winning the junior titles at the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships in 1979 made him the No. 1 junior in the world for that year. He went on to a successful career as a professional tennis player for a decade and a half, with wins over several of the world’s top players and earned a career-high ranking of 23. He was a quarterfinalist at the Wimbledon and US Open Championships. 
Ramesh’s best moments on a tennis court came while representing India in Davis Cup, reaching the final in 1987, semi final in 1993 and quarter final in 1985. He also reached the quarter final in the doubles event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Since retiring in 1993, Ramesh started the KTC to nurture promising players. During this time, he served as the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup Team for a few years. The Govt of India has honored him with the Arjuna Award (1981) and the Padma Shri (1998) for services rendered in the field of tennis.

Autograph - Ramanathan Krishnan (Tennis)



Ramanathan Krishnan is one of India’s most iconic sportsmen. Among the top 10 players in the world,he rose to as high as No.3 in 1959. Taught by his father, the late Mr. T. K. Ramanathan, he began his trailblazing career by winning the National title in 1953 at the age of 16, and was India’s top ranked player from 1953 to 1968. His semi final showing at the Wimbledon singles in 1960 and 1961 is still the best achievement by an Indian in a grand slam singles event. 
He was the leading member of the Davis Cup team for many years, taking India to the Davis Cup Finals for the first time in 1966. Later, he was the non playing captain of the Davis Cup team that reached the final in 1974. The Govt of India has honored him with the Arjuna award, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of tennis.

Gayatri Krishnan is the fourth generation to take up tennis competitively. As one of the top juniors in the under 14 category, she has represented India overseas as part of the national team. She was also one of the leading players in the under 18 category, reaching the semifinals of the Junior Nationals. Gayatri also competed in several ITF junior tournaments internationally, achieving a top 350 ranking. 
She went onto have a successful NCAA undergraduate college tennis career in the USA, graduating with top academic and athletic honors. Since then, Gayatri has completed her Masters, worked in Marketing in two different industries, and is now using her experience to run and develop the program at KTC.
