Ramesh
Krishnan was born into this illustrious tennis playing
family. Coached first by his grandfather, and later by his father, he also won
the National title at the age of 16 in 1977. Winning the junior titles at the French
Open and the Wimbledon Championships in 1979 made him the No. 1 junior in the
world for that year. He went on to a successful career as a professional tennis
player for a decade and a half, with wins over several of the world’s top
players and earned a career-high ranking of 23. He was a quarterfinalist at the
Wimbledon and US Open Championships.
Ramesh’s best moments
on a tennis court came while representing India in Davis Cup, reaching the
final in 1987, semi final in 1993 and quarter final in 1985. He also reached
the quarter final in the doubles event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Since retiring in 1993, Ramesh started the KTC to nurture promising players.
During this time, he served as the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup
Team for a few years. The Govt of India has honored him with the Arjuna Award
(1981) and the Padma Shri (1998) for services rendered in the field of tennis.
